What is the Enneagram? The Enneagram is at a fundemental level, a personality typology system, and in fact it offers far more than this, as it is a system that truly enables the understanding of human behaviour with all its complexities. As we start to understand the Enneagram it offers us the opportunity for signficant personal growth and transformation. As we get to understand our own Enneagram type as well as the system overall, it enables us to live with greater compassion for ourselves as well as for others. We may often ask ourselves questions like: Why are certain of my relationships not working? Why do I feel an instant connection with some people and not with others? Why do I feel anxious, or fearful of sad? Our real question is often “Who am I” and how can I optimise my life? The Enneagram can be thought of as a map of Self-discovery and the first point of departure is to understand the Nine Personality types and then to go beyound this to understand the levels of development of each type, each type’s underlying driving basic Fears and basic desires. It is a system that enables us to live with greater presence and Insight into ourselves and others. Each of the Nine types have strengths and development areas and bring value to the world and in fact no Type is better than the other. Here is a brief thumbprint of each of the personality types based on the Riso-Hudson approach to the Enneagram.
